The Vedas, composed in Vedic Sanskrit, represent the oldest stratum of Sanskrit literature and form the foundational scriptures of Hinduism. They are often referred to as śruti ("what is heard") literature, setting them apart from other religious texts known as smṛti ("what is remembered").
